As digital technology advances, new dental implantation models are being introduced and implemented progressively in clinical practice. Dental implant surgery can be performed with enhanced precision through dynamic navigation (DN), a digital technology derived from computer-aided navigation (CAN). This technique involves scanning and reconstructing the jaw anatomy with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) three-dimension (3D) imaging, as well as tracking and presenting the patient’s oral cavity surgical equipment used in real-time by a positioning system. Computer alignment technology is used in order to match the intraoperative oral space to the preoperative virtual model. The evaluation of implant restorations has progressively changed from an early focus on survival rates to functional recovery and aesthetic results as a result of the “restoration-oriented” implantation concept. The precision of the implantation pathway is crucial to achieving the ideal placement of the implants in oral implant technology.
DN technology helps to perform successful implant rehabilitation in atrophy jaws, allow an optimal final location, to avoid the risk of damaging the noble anatomical structures near the site and allow the achievement of satisfactory aesthetics. This lecture will mainly introduce the ongoing trends in DN implantation, and the factors influencing its precision, along with its advantages, disadvantages, and limitations. Clinical examples are provided, as well as a brief demonstration of the workflow and clinical guidelines for the safe usage of DN implantation.
