Title : Implant-supported Prosthodontics under Digital Technology Age

Abstract

The integration of digital technologies in the field of dental implant dentistry has been the prevailing trend in the dental world as it can simplify the complex clinical therapy process and improve the comfort of the patient. For complex implant prosthetic rehabilitation cases, conventional “free-hand” implant placement approach is time-consuming and rely strongly on the experience of the dental clinician. With the smoothly integration of novel digital tools and technologies such as intraoral scan、facial scan、CBCT scan and dental computer-aided design software, patient-specific information such the patient’s face, teeth, oral mucosa, bone and mandibular movements could be accurately recorded and integrated to create a 3D virtual dental patient, which can promote the communication between patient、clinician and dental techician, and also facilitate the preoperative digital implant surgery planning. Then, digital surgical template and interim prostheses for immediate loading could be designed and manufactured based on the preoperative planning. During the surgery, implants could be placed into the designed site with the aid of the surgical template and prefabricated interim prostheses could be modified and inserted on the same day of surgery. For patients that need bone reduction, bone reduction guide could also be designed according to the preoperative designing and used to create an ideal bone reduction plane. During the final restoration fabrication, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture technologies could be utilized to copy the preoperative prosthesis designing.

  Digital technology indeed facilitate toady’s dental implant treatment procedure. However, all aspects of dental treatment rest in the hands of people, and no treatment could be completely finished solely via digital technology. Some work like the reproduction of teeth texture during the restoration fabrication could only be achieved by experienced dental techician and clinician, so human experience and conventional technologies also play a vital role in today’s implant dentistry. And bring the best of digital technology and human experience together to achieve harmony with one another is the best way to bring convenience and happiness to clinician and our patients.
